Elementary School / Austin Family Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

kid photographer, black and white, hula-hoop I was recently asked to create imagery for a local elementary school to post in their office. The images were to include child models but avoid faces so the images could be as anonymous as possible, it was also requested that the images be B/W exclusively.

It was a lot of fun to work on, and I think the images are amazing!

Charlie Heras - Austin Children's Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

austin infant photographer Charlie Heras. The newest addition to the Heras Family. We had the pleasure of photographing Linsey and Marcos' wedding last year and they are a positively delightful family. So we were honored when we were asked to photograph sweet little Charlie and big brother Ben for their first family portrait. Unfortunately, Marcos was working.  Next time for sure.

Lewis Family - A south Congress Family Portrait - Austin Family Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

red and blue, family portrait, austin weddings Leila surprised her husband with a Father's Day family session. Clearly he must have known something, I'm not sure they travel in matching outfits. Or perhaps they do ;) They did great!  And here I thought I was working with normal people and Ben pops out with "Depth of Field" and I knew I was working with people who can "See". Little Ben, the 2 year old, was the best baby I have ever worked with, hands down. Way better than my own 2 year old. Leila was photographed on South Congress for her maternity shots a few years ago, so they chose that location again. It's an over used area.  I try not to shoot there that much but it does make it that much more fresh for me when I do get down there. I do love exploring the area. The Lewis Family was WONDERFUL to work with. I hope to work with them again. Thanks for having me.

Happy Father's Day! - personal - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

cooking with the kids, fathers day Since B was born I always wanted to introduce him to cooking in the kitchen with Mama. It's one of my most favorite things and I think he would like it too. He really likes to eat. So we started off with sifting flour, he thinks sifting flour from a height of about 2 feet looked "pretty," then we segued into stirring which was a hit, but then the train jumped the track when he decided to eat the pancakes dry ingredients.

B has been going through a particularly whiney period and it's been driving Mommy and Daddy up a wall. But when you get a little of this, albeit fleeting, it's almost worth it. I said almost.

Then we woke Daddy up and brought him his breakfast and gifts.

Then the day turns back into Bishop Day, like every other day.

Ricker Family - Austin Family Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Small family photograph The Ricker Family comes from Central, Texas but are currently residing in Florida. Patrice's good friend Tracy Lynn had her engagement session in the same location. Patrice was so taken by the look, that she scheduled her trip for the wedding early by one day so she could have the same backdrop for her family. She did NOT want a beach scene for her family portraits. It was a silly cold morning but this family was unstoppable. Colton (our 9 month old) was not a huge fan, but watch him muscle through the cold for these great shots. We shot at Katherine Fleisher Park in Austin, one of my favorite spots, there are tons of options. I love this place. You might recognize it here and there.

Have a good weekend.

My B - personal - Austin Children Photography by Melanie Grizzel

at home childrens photographer I had a beautiful baby boy 2+ years ago. I had all of these ideas about what kids would mean to me.

baby portrait austin

My mom, while she had to work extra hard to keep us in food and clothes, was an ideal example of what parenting was/is. She loves wholly. It's hard to describe that perfect kind of love.  I remember bits about my childhood and life with her and just remember always feeling like I was wrapped in a warm embrace. I thought for sure that would be the type of parent I would be, think only of my children and making all of my decisions based on their welfare, exclusively. I'm not like my mom, I have a million interests and a career I LOVE. I spend a fair amount of time away from my son, and for a while I thought he didn't care for me too much.  I recently took him to meet his new baby cousin Rhett when he was born and I had my son on my own for 3 days. No Daddy.  No Nanny.  I was scared. How would I handle every moment on my own?

It's amazing to me that there are people out there that love children so much they want to work with them all day.  Our Nanny and my mom would easily take a child on their own and play all day and do all the things a child would like the entire day. I like doing laundry and dishes (not really, but I DO like when they're done.) How can I do all of the things in life and still give my child all of the things he needs like college, cottage cheese and playtime? He went through a particularly bad period where he would whine constantly.  As a parent I thought you can tell what's wrong with your kid, but that was on average. Everyday he would whine and I wouldn't know what the problem was but that I knew he couldn't express himself and this was the base of his frustration. WOW this was a rough patch.  Sometimes I can say I wasn't sure if I even liked him, every day was a struggle and I would think why did we have kids again?

Then today I woke up and he was laying on his belly three feet from the cat and asking her "What's your name?" I said "Her name is Mamma, she doesn't talk like you." He ignored this altogether and proceeded with, "Kitty, what's your name?" With that my heart swelled to an unprecedented size and burst into a million baby hearts. On our one-on-one trip to see his baby cousin that immediately trailed a family trip to New York, we bonded. We really connected, his health is good and he is learning everyday more words and putting phrases together. We started with, during his terribly rough patch, "May I have _____, please" it really helped to curb the whining, and he is very capable now. He uses the phrase for everything "May I have cottage cheese, please?" for obvious reasons. And "May I have playground please?" when he wants to go play. And when I wasn't pushing his swing fast enough "May I have higher please?"

Now I know if he is crabby which is usually once every couple of weeks, it's probably because he is tired or bored. We're told all the time what an easy child he is, which is always followed with, "wait till the next one!" usually with a little snicker... Oh yeah?! maybe we just make good kids.

sleeping baby photography

his beloved Bunny Bear, never leaves home without him. Neither do we ;)

Raising a child is a balancing act, with each success there is a usually a new challenge.  In our case, he can communicate but that means he can now express a preference to sleep in our bed instead of his own. Just when you think you've got this child rearing thing tapped, a new situation presents itself. You discuss with your spouse what the next move should be and implement. Then hopefully that problem is solved and you can ride a 2 to 3 day parenting success wave before there is a new issue you get to work on. When my son was due I was scared out of my mind. Not only, "Will I be a good parent?" but also "How do I keep an infant breathing?" these were my concerns. I had a good friend tell me, "God wouldn't present you with a problem you can't solve." Luckily all of those problems don't come at once. It is years worth of weekly challenges, but with each issue comes real hugs.  "I you too," which is Bishop speak for I love you,  and this....

Sometimes I think my heart may burst with happiness.

7.9.10 Faith by Melanie Grizzel

Faith is our next door neighbor's daughter. I made arrangements with our good friend Meg, that we would trade 2 year old portraits of faith for a lifetime of babysitting. I win!
Faith was what you call a blue baby, she had a hole in her heart when she was born and Meg and Corby were warned that their first daughter would be whisked away moments after her birth to have open heart surgery. It turned out that she was in a better shape than they thought, they were able to take her home and fatten her up and get her ready for her operation at 3 months old. The doctors explained, they'll notice it in her color. It was true, she was always pale and bluish in the beginning, after her surgery she was decidedly more pink and healthy looking. A few short months after her heart operation she had plastic surgery to correct a cleft lip. In the future, around 16,  she'll have another operation to enlarge the vein going to her heart  and she may choose to have another operation for the scaring near the cleft lip site, but it's virtually unnoticeable. But young woman are their own worst critics, she may still find fault with her scarring. Today she is an exuberant, beautiful, screaming red head with a temper to match. She is the apple of everyone's eye. She's my neighbor.

5.8.10 People Magazine by Melanie Grizzel

About 4 weeks ago I was contract to go to Dallas for People Magazine for a story about Brandon Henry. I love working with People, the stories are always really meaty and relevant. So I kind of had a grasp on his story, his girlfriend 7-8 month pregnant went to Italy on vacation delivered their baby and came home and lied about being pregnant still then came upw ith some story to throw him off.
Well he finally go down to the bottom of the story went ot Italy found his baby in a convent there and went through all of the rigamarole to claim his baby and bring him home... If you want to read the full 3 page story, buy extra groceries and read it while you wait to be checked out.
I inititally went in concerend for him and how he would be able to cope with this, but quickly learned that he is a remarkably equipped man and a great father. It makes me excited for their futures. He has a big supportive family and you just know everything is going to be wonderful for them. We wish them all the best in the world and congratulations, Dad!

4.15.10 Gullahorn Family by Melanie Grizzel

Six months ago, or so, I was asked to donate services to a cause I believe in. So Patti bid on our offer and won our services, she wasn't sure what to do with it at first but decided that she would hold onto it until her big birthday she had coming up. So while she had her entire family in town for her birthday we shot her entire family.
It's brief glimpse into what it could be like in such a large family (3boys and 1girl) plus all of their spouses and kids (6 grandkids) and (2 great-grandparents) so in total 15? It's a strange kind  of chaos, a happy chaos, the kind of blinding nuttiness that can only come with a family this size. We wanted to take portraits of all of the family units plus the whole family and different groups and singles where there was time. It was a smashing success.
The Gullahorn's bought a giant piece of property "out in the country" 30 some years ago and it's fun to think this is just the scene they imagined when they made this wonderful purchase.
Thank you for looking.
Tomorrow, stay tuned for Samantha's bachelorette party.
As usual you can see more images on facebook.

8.31.09 Cousins by Melanie Grizzel

Last weekend my sister Hillarie and her daughter Reagan (Bishop's cousin) came to visit for the weekend. Reagan is 2.5 years old now and she talks and walks and has this awesome personality that you just seem to be drawn to. She also gives the best hugs of just about anyone I know. She's not shy, she is extremely forthcoming and affectionate. I just can't get enough of her...
please enjoy these great big blue eyes.

8.28.09 People en Espanol by Melanie Grizzel

About 6 weeks ago we shot this really fun job in Corpus Christie for People en Espanol. The subjects were contest winners. Ana had written an essay about the importance of family, so her entire family was awarded a trip to NYC to attend a Puerto Rican celebration in Central Park and a day or 2 to spend time with their family in the Big Apple. I imagine they've already been on their trip, but if you pick up a copy of People en Espanol you'll see one of these images.

I became friends on facebook with Ana and I can't wait to post her pictures. We have another big assignment coming up this next month and I am really excited about it. It's going to be meaty and challenging, and perhaps a little heart breaking. Wish me luck.
Take Good Care.

1-15-09 Bishop Alden Howe by Melanie Grizzel

1-15-09 I've been a little bit busy.

So I've not written in quite a while we have been so busy, the least of which is our new addition to our family. Bishop Alden Howe (Alden for his paternal great grandfather.)
In a nutshell we began having company starting on December 26th for the holidays and we have had company ever since. He had holiday guests for the first week + 1/2 then we have had baby guests ever since. My mother-in-law has ben here since baby came to help get us assimilated. Thank goodness we could not have mangaed without her, I have not done laundry or prepared a meal since she arrived. So we are well fed and taking care of our sweet little one. Starting next week we'll be all alone and I think we are ready.
Here are a couple shots of our little bundle, many more to come.
enjoy

12-11-08 Wow's Birthday by Melanie Grizzel

12-11-08 This is my sister Hillarie's birthday today. I tried to ring her on 3 phone numbers and a text but she is not surfacing, good for her for taking a day away from it all.

I'm sure she couldn't possibly miss our dad's faithful Birthday good morning jingle "You Say it's your birthday." You just haven't lived, until you've heard that song, full back-up bad, live @ 7:30 in the morning, over the phone. He has been honoring us with this tradition for several years now. I usually listen then ask him to call back and leave me a message so I can keep it for a few months, it's so fun. Then he calls back with the same number for next year. It is something I look forward to every year.
In honor of Hill's Birthday I thought I'd post some pictures of her daughter, my niece, Reagan. She is growing up now, she'll be 2 in February and really starting to come into her own, in terms of personality and she is so much fun to play with. Over Thanksgiving she found herself a little Santa hat and hammed it up for the camera.
Thanks for looking.
Happy Birthday Wow (it's a pet name)
