Vista West Ranch - fall of 2014

We had an absolute blast at our wedding. What we wanted was a special day to celebrate with our friends that fully matched our personalities and would leave our friends and family thinking "Yep, that's exactly what I would have pictured for Angela and Greg." We wanted it to be personal more than perfect, so we just planned with that in mind, without trying to compete with elaborate Pinterest ideas, other weddings we'd been to, or flawless wedding blog posts. We had an extremely talented friend do the ceremony music, we had a cookie cake (complete with the Cookie Monster song during the cake cutting) along with Amy's Ice Cream, we had Buc-ee as our cake topper (who in Texas doesn't love Buc-ees?), we had fajitas for dinner, and we had our dog as the ring bearer. The most memorable parts of the day for me were the flower girl (my niece) going back to the aisle mid-ceremony to pick up the flowers she had dropped along the aisle on the way in and my dad's toast at the beginning of the reception (had people crying, then laughing, the crying again). The best advice I have for a couple planning their wedding is to not get wrapped up in the planning and everyone else's ideas and expectations for the event. Don't let anyone convince you that you care more about a certain aspect than you actually do (I promise no one even remembers that didn't go with fancy china at the wedding). Just think about the two of you as a couple, plan your day to enjoy it, and remember that it's the life ahead of you that's the most important part!

What was most important to me on our wedding day was that we got to ENJOY the day from beginning to end. That would be my biggest piece of advice to any bride - envision your perfect wedding day and plan for it just like you have the actual wedding. I personally wanted to spend quality time with my family and closest girlfriends while getting ready, marry the man of my dreams and throw a fantastic party.

I arranged to have a space at the venue where my girlfriends and I could get ready and be there to answer any questions and ensure everything for the set up ran smoothly. The makeup artist and hair stylist came to us and we had food/drinks and champagne. It was a great day. I did a first look with Matthew so that we could have some private moments together and have most of the photos taken before the ceremony. It was important to us that we got to enjoy the cocktail hour and reception with friends and family, and having most of the photos complete enabled us to do that and maximize our time.

Another key thing for me was to remember that as long as we were married at the end of the day, none of the other stuff really mattered. Things will go wrong. Some things went wrong on our wedding day.....but they all got resolved one way or another. Things won't go exactly as you planned no matter how much you plan, so just focus on what really matters. No one will remember small details in a year - but they will remember that you got married and that they had a good time. The bride and groom set the tone, so just be happy and enjoy!

from Nicole: After four and a half years of dating I knew Bobby was the one. During planning, everyone told me I was so calm and not stressed out and I think it was because I knew no matter what happened that day, I was going to be married to the love of my life at the end of the day. I jumped from detail to detail carefully laying out plans as to how I wanted everything to look that day. The whole week before the wedding was nerve racking only because a hurricane in the Pacific kept throwing dark clouds and thunderstorms across Austin. While waiting to get my hair/makeup done the morning of the wedding I sat by the window staring at the dark clouds above us. While I knew I couldn't change the weather, I did have a little sadness inside not knowing if we could hold the ceremony at the beautiful arbor outside. Sure enough, as the day went on, the clouds drifted away and a beautiful sunset greeted our guests. I was relieved and all around happy when it came time to do the First Look and seeing Bobby all spiffed up in his tux calmed any last minute nerves. I'm glad we got to share those intimate moments before the ceremony just the two of us. The rest of the night was just a blur, but I will never forget when we were walking over to the ceremony space and I saw my dad for the first time all dressed up as a bride. His happy tears and the hug and a kiss were just what I needed to know that he will always be there for me and that I now have two men in my life who mean the world to me.

Angela and Greg staged a destination wedding at Vista West Ranch to celebrate each other and their family. One week before, we met up and hit a few of their favorite Austin locations for an engagement session. First on their list was Mary Street and the "Greetings from Austin" wall which is recently restored with new paint and looks better than ever! Next up was UT and the surrounding area including the "Hi, How are you" wall across the drag from campus. We hit the iconic wall trifecta with the "I love you so much" wall on South Congress. While there we toured through Hotel San Jose and Home Slice. It was clear how much these two love this city and adore each other. We made surprisingly good time crisscrossing around town, and had a great time from start to finish. So it was no surprise the following week when their wedding was equal parts sheik, easy and lovely. More on their gorgeous wedding soon!

5 years and counting... an Austin Wedding Photographer / September 19, 2014 by Melanie Grizzel

The summertime is quiet: not a lot of commercial work going on, and in Texas, not a lot of weddings happening either. We had time to hang out and reflect on important things. This year I reflected by spending the entire summer with my boy before he started Kindergarten. We went out all day, played with our friends, and took naps together. It was perfect! Then the end of August rolls around and all of a sudden wedding season is upon us again. In the interest of getting back to work, someone recently asked me for a picture of myself in action. So I went through my virtual folder of images and kept coming across all of these images of us smiling, laughing and dancing at weddings. I realized, while I had a great summer "off," I REALLY missed my life as a wedding photographer. I put together a collection of images of Steve and I doing what we love.

This fall marks our 5 year anniversary as wedding photographers in Austin. We started She-N-He in 2009 and we find something new to love about it every single year. We've seen some amazing things since we started in this business. We've had the wonderful fortune to follow families though their weddings, pregnancies, births, birthdays and so on. I can't imagine a more fulfilling experience. I'm thrilled to photograph weddings and families and we have a damn good time doing it too.

On June 1^st, 2014 I felt like the luckiest girl alive when I married the love of my life, Drew. Our wedding day was beyond what we could have even hoped for! Drew and I have boundless gratitude to everyone who took part in making our wedding day as unique and unforgettable as it was; this of course included our family and friends, who came out to celebrate with us and to cheer us on, as well as the fantastic vendors, who made our special night possible.

First off, I absolutely loved our venue, Hummingbird House, as it provided a tasteful tropical setting for us to hold both the ceremony and the reception. The natural and vibrant surroundings at HH saved me time and unnecessary worry, because I didn’t have to focus much energy on how to decorate the venue. Most of the things I wanted or needed were already included, such as seasonal flora located throughout the property, a reception tent, as well as minimalist lighting and lantern accents.

About ¾ of the way into planning the wedding, I hired a coordinator from Pearl Events, named Jennifer Seals. My only regret was that I didn’t start working with her sooner!! Jennifer helped tremendously in so many ways throughout the final months and weeks leading up to our wedding. Additionally, I was extremely impressed with our caterer, Pink Avocado. They offered superior customer service throughout the planning process and at our wedding, which was a nice bonus to their food being a major crowd pleaser! I also LOVED what STEMS floral design put together for our centerpieces – their staff was so knowledgeable and friendly, and I really appreciate the fact that they honored our budget.

I could go on and on about how amazing each and every vendor was, but I’ll wrap it up with a brief mention of just 2 more who I wouldn’t think to leave out J …

DJ Mike (with Live Oak DJ) was such an asset to our team of vendors – he was extremely organized, punctual, detail-oriented and talented. We couldn’t have asked for a better DJ to keep our guests and us smiling and dancing throughout the evening. Last but not least, we hit the jackpot when we found She-N-He Photography! During our engagement shoot with Mel (and even in my initial meeting with her), her positive attitude, outgoing personality, and great sense of humor helped us feel comfortable and confident. So of course adding all of this to Mel’s awesome talent we were super excited to work with her again on our wedding day! On the big day, she and her partner Steve graciously accommodated to our timeline, and prepared a sort of mini first look, since we didn’t have enough time for something more extensive. I’m so happy we were able to squeeze in a brief moment for my dashing groom and I to “take each other in” before the Ketubah signing and ceremony started – this was definitely a highlight, along with not falling on my face during the first dance!

We’re just so grateful to all of the amazing people who showed up on our wedding day – behind and in front of the scenes – with bells and whistles on, and with professionalism and patience in high gear, because Drew and I will always smile when we reflect back on this day!

Greg and I were both nervous about the weather forecast on our wedding day. With our initial plan to get married outdoors, when it started raining we went with Plan B. Personally, I had spent a year planning and was distraught with the thought of not getting married outdoors. In the end, going with Plan B was the way it was just meant to be! Suzanne, our planner, made the switch from outdoor to indoor wedding before my bridesmaids and I arrived. I was stunned how beautifully everything had come together. It was as if we had planned the wedding indoors all along! Moments before the ceremony the sun came out and was shining magically through the stained glass windows. Holding our wedding inside the hall was so intimate and special, we talk often about how much we loved our ceremony.

There are a few moments that stand out to us. Right after the ceremony we just truly felt on Cloud 9 and that continued all night. At the end of the wedding our guests went outside to start the sparklers and Greg and I had one last dance, just the two of us alone in Mercury Hall. This was such a truly special moment for us, dancing to Ray LaMontagne "You are the Best Thing". Hearing that song takes us back to our wedding day. We had so much fun at our wedding and are so blessed to have such amazing friends, family and wedding vendors make our special day come true!

From the moment we got engaged, there was one thing we were certain of: the wedding had to be simple and it had to be laid back, just like our style. Yes, there were certain elements we had to have, but at the same time it would be completely representative of our unique, easy-going personalities. We chose the stunning outdoor location at Hacienda Del Lago and secured Suellen at Everything's Possible to coordinate. Over the next year, we decided on the essentials and selected Fresh Off The Truck food truck to cater, the super-excellent Mel from She-n-He Photography, JR Digital Video to record thoughtful video of the entire day and Marquee Linens to provide simple, yet elegant linens. Eric from Penguin Entertainment kept the party going with his great music selections and ability to read the crowd.

In the end, everything turned out better than we could have hoped for. We're extremely happy we chose the vendors we did, because they were able to tailor everything to match our styles and made sure the day embodied us completely. We couldn't have done it without them. The only thing I would have done differently is I wouldn't have stressed over the decorations as much; because when the day was over, everyone was there to have a good time and not critique the decor.
